Maxine Artis Freeman died Thursday, December 15, 2022, at the age of 74, at the Oaks at Chanticleer memory care facility in Greenville, SC, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
A native of Eureka, NC, and long-time resident of Winston-Salem, NC, she was married to Earl Lee Freeman, deceased, from December 1967 until their divorce in October 1975. She was a graduate of Norwayne High School in Fremont, NC; and a cum laude graduate of Winston-Salem State University, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1971. She earned her first Master's degree in 1979 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a second Master's degree from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in 1990.
She worked as the librarian at East Surry High School in Pilot Mountain, NC (Surry County) from 1971-1981; and as the librarian/media coordinator for several schools, including Northwest Middle School, Mount Tabor High School, Cook Middle School, and East Forsyth High School, in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system, from 1981 until her retirement in 2001. She had lived in Winston-Salem, NC until January 2017, when she relocated into a memory care facility in Greenville, SC.
Maxine loved gardening, crafting, reading, researching a wide variety of topics, dancing, and singing.
She is survived by her daughter Yvette Freeman and George Rash (son-in-law) of Zirconia, NC; her brother Earl Artis of Goldsboro, NC; Marcus (nephew) and Marella Croom of Indianapolis, IN; Gay (niece) and Marcus Hill of Elm City, NC; Mary Hicks (aunt) and Elizabeth Uzzell (aunt), both of Eureka, NC; Mary Odoms (aunt) of Durham, NC; Gene Ray Artis (uncle) of Washington, DC; Matthew Newsome (uncle) of Frederick, MD, and several cousins.
Maxine will be cremated with a celebration of life service scheduled for 1pm, January 7, 2023 at Thomas-Yelverton Funeral Service, 2704 Nash Street NW, Wilson, NC.
