Max Turner, 91, a longtime resident of Sandy Springs and lover of barbecue and bluegrass, passed peacefully in his sleep at Northside Hospital on February 8, 2021.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Rebecca Reins Turner who passed away in 2005, and is survived by his three children, Ginny Manry of Sandy Springs, GA, Greg Turner of Murphy, NC, and Lainey Wallace of Keller, TX, as well as seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of loving family members and friends.
Max was born on December 13,1929 in Miller's Creek, NC to parents Paris V. Turner and Ina Myers Turner. After high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War as a driver for a U.S. General. Upon returning home, Max married Rebecca Reins, and the pair moved to Atlanta where they raised their three children. Max graduated from Southern Technical Institute and worked in commercial real estate for 50+ years.
A lifelong Republican, Max loved NASCAR, the Atlanta Falcons, John Wayne, bluegrass, and a good stiff drink. Known for his bountiful backyard garden and knack for smoking barbecue, each summer friends would pay Max a visit for freshly picked tomatoes, and at Christmas they'd return for one of his famous smoked hams. Affectionately known by his friends as "Booty," and by his grandchildren as "BooBoo" and "Big Dandy," he will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
In keeping with his wishes, Max will be inurned in Wilkesboro, NC. A celebration of life will be held in Atlanta after COVID-19 restrictions have lifted.
