Maurine Ener Behrens, 96, of Beaumont, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 26, 2022, in Beaumont, Texas. She was born on April 10, 1926, in Hemphill, Texas to Bennena Smith Ener and Norman Ener.
Maurine is survived by her loving husband of seventy years, Paul Behrens of Beaumont, their daughter, Beth Christal of Buda, and son, Paul "P.D." Behrens Jr. and his wife, Tanya, of Beaumont. She is reunited in heaven with their daughter, Barbara Galloway of Hemphill, who passed in January of 2021. Maurine was affectionately known as "Honey" to her seven grandchildren: Stacy Johnson and her husband, Edward; Marc Christal and his wife, Jessica; Shelby Lopez and her husband, Ram; Brady Behrens and his wife, Janaye; Samantha Templeton and her husband, Josh; Shay Galloway; Sophie Galloway; and eleven great-grandchildren: Grayson Johnson, Parker and Vivienne Christal, Emory, Ramsey, and Brenham Lopez, Paul, Sarabeth, Grant, and Lucy Behrens, and Gabe Templeton. Maurine also had numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family is forever grateful to the love and care provided by Carolina Batista, whom they consider part of the Behrens' Family.
Born and raised in East Texas and through the Great Depression, Maurine developed many valuable skills during her early years, such as: tending to the family garden, canning vegetables, dressing deer, cooking, and maintaining a home. Maurine graduated from Stephen F. Austin University and then taught Home Economics. Maurine loved to tell the story of how she met Paul through mutual friends. Fittingly, their first date was to play their favorite game, Bridge. Paul was apparently smitten because he invited her to attend a service at the Methodist church with him the next morning. Maurine's loved ones recall the affectionate banter between them and how she could hold her own with Paul's quick wit. The love and life of Paul and his "Maudie" has been an inspiration for generations. Maurine devoted her life to her family as a wife, mother, and homemaker. Maurine was loving, but firm and poised, yet fun. She could always be relied upon to make her grandchildren a milkshake or teach them how to do a dove call. She was a worthy opponent in dominos or any card game. Maurine loved holidays and always opened their home to host these special celebrations. She could often be found in the kitchen cooking up a good home cooked meal or a family favorite: fried venison. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, making crafts, traveling the country with Paul and their friends, and visiting with extended family that she was very close to. Paul and Maurine always maintained beautiful flower beds and took pride in showing their blooms. Maurine was a longtime active member at Wesley United Methodist Church in Beaumont, where she was a proud member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class. Those who knew her knew that her faith was genuine and unwavering. Maurine especially loved yellow roses, which are now viewed with fondness as a tribute to her by her family.
Maurine is preceded in death by her parents; her three siblings: Marjorie Savoy and her husband, Joe; Nelwyn Meredith and her husband, Dudley; and Norman Ener and his wife, Mary Helen; and daughter, Barbara Galloway.
A gathering of Mrs. Behrens' family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., with her memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Broussard's 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard's Crematorium.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in Maurine's name can be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas 77713 or a charity of your choice.
