Maureen Mary Becker Miller, 93, beloved wife, and devoted mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, great grandmother and friend, passed away at home surrounded by family on June 16, 2021. She was born December 17, 1927 to William Frederick Becker and Mabel Johnson Becker in Fremont, Wisconsin. She married William Ballou Miller on December 31, 1949 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on January 27, 2007.
She attended Winneconne High School and was voted Homecoming Queen her junior year. She attended Oshkosh State Teacher's College, now the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and graduated from Oshkosh Business College.
Maureen loved her city and community, and generously gave of her time leading and serving in many roles. She was Chairman of the Mardi Gras Ball, a catholic organization honoring high school senior catholic girls-1974. She was Chairman of the Bishop Guild ( under Bishop Carmody ) 2006. She was a member and past President of the Corpus Christi Geologist Wives Auxiliary and The Petrol Club. She was a member of Monday Forum, Pan American Round Table, Cotillion "Allegre", Corpus Christi Symphony Guild, Corpus Christi Country Club, Town Club, and Yacht Club.
Maureen and Bill were Honorary Ch hiairmen of the Diabetes Gala and The American Heart Ball. In 2004 they were honored as "Philanthropists of the Year". She and Bill were lead donors of the Legaretta building, The William B. and Maureen Miller wing of the Art Museum of South Texas that opened in 2006.
She was on the Board of the Art Museum of South Texas and past Chairman of the Board Emeritus, The Aquarium, The American Heart Association, The Symphony, and Spohn Foundation Board Emeritus. She was on the Advisory Board of the Women's Shelter, American Diabetes, Art Council at A&M University, Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for children in Killeen, Texas, and Raise Your Hand. In 2011 Maureen received a Community Service Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution. Also at that time she received a Proclamation from the Mayor declaring February 18, 2011 as Maureen Miller Day, and her achievements were recognized by Governor Perry.
She is survived by her children, Robert Edward Miller ( Susan ) Minneapolis and Anne Miller Brock ( Richard ) Dallas; grandchildren, Ellen Miller McAlpin of Minneapolis, William Brock of Boulder Colorado, Elizabeth Brock McKee ( Murrey ) of Dallas and Catherine Brock of Atlanta; great-grandchild, Christian McAlpin of Minneapolis; her niece, Susan Baitinger Nickel ( Tom ), Jane Fisher ( Ken ) of Clinton New Jersey; nephews, John Baitinger ( Susan ) of Wisconsin, Steven Grassl ( Mary Lou ) of Syracuse New York.
She is preceded in death by her grandson, Austin Miller August 24, 2020; her sister, Shirley Baitinger on March 23, 2016; and nephew, David Baitinger in 1969 ( Vietnam ).
Maureen will always be remembered as lovely and gracious, with a great sense of style. She was devoted to her family, friends and community, always bringing excellence to every endeavor she participated in. She enriched the lives of all who knew her and will be greatly missed.
The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Margarita Martinez and Jina Garcia, and all of her wonderful caretakers for their excellent care while Maureen was at home.
A memorial service will be held at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, June 22 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Art Museum of South Texas Endowment Fund or the Corpus Christi Symphony Endowment Fund.
