On Friday, May 1, 2020, Mattie G. Turner, a loving mother, wife, sister, cousin, elder, and friend, gained her wings in her home with her family by her side.
Mattie was born on May 7, 1949 in Middleburg, VA. She graduated from Douglass High School in Leesburg VA, received her bachelor's degree from Marymount University in 1997, and she worked for 32 years with the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1972, she married Wayne Michael Turner. They raised two daughters, Kim Turner and Erika Turner Lawson.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, son ("baby" Turner), mother (Dorothy Grayson), step-father (Earl Grayson), and brothers (Rico Grayson and Leo Grayson).
She is survived by her children, grandchildren (Haley and Paula Lawson), sister (Pattie Gilbert), and a host of nieces, nephews, sister-cousins, cousins, and adopted children.
Mattie was a faithful servant and she dedicated her life to serving God's kingdom. She was ordained as an evangelist in 2016 and as an elder in 2018. She served for decades at several churches, including Mount Zion Baptist Church - St. Louis VA, Harvest Mediteratian, Holy and Whole Ministries, and Oak Grove Baptist Church. She is Vice President of "Halo," a Christian magazine. She volunteered her time at Forest Grove Elementary school as well the Tiny Acorns summer camp and Women's bible study at Oak Grove Baptist Church.
She was a member of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. and United Methodist Women.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 11am at a private location due to COVID-19.
