MaryAnn Targos, age 80, of The Villages, FL passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025 at Chesterfield Heights in Midlothian, VA after a long struggle with various health issues. She was surrounded by her loving family when she passed.
MaryAnn was born September 30, 1944 in Queens, NY to the late Joseph and Anna Stabile. She grew up in the Cambria Heights section of Queens, NY. Her childhood was marked by delightful trips to Bavaria, Germany, her mother's homeland, where she, her brother, Bob Stabile, and her cousin, Barbara Pavelik, enjoyed visiting family and friends. She attended Dominican Commercial Catholic High School in Jamaica, Queens, specializing in stenography. Upon graduation, she embarked on her career, first as a secretary at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample advertising on Madison Avenue in NYC. She later transitioned to a role as a Ticket Agent for Eastern Airlines at LaGuardia Airport where she had the thrill of assisting celebrities like Bob Hope. It was during this time she met Frederick (Fred) and despite her better judgement, married him. They moved to the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn where she gave birth to her three children. She dedicated time to volunteering at Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic School and working part time at the local fish market, often bringing home fresh seafood to share with her family.
In 1979, MaryAnn and her family moved to Nanuet, NY. She raised their children with incredible love and a gentle strength. She prepared gourmet home-cooked meals which she often shared with priests at Hallel in Sparkhill, NY, neighbors or friends in need. Fred and MaryAnn became active members of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. There, MaryAnn served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, a bingo volunteer and team captain, and a CCD teacher for many years. While undertaking these roles, she worked various jobs, including as an executive secretary at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, from which she retired in 2005.
In 2005, MaryAnn and Fred retired to The Villages, FL. There she developed a love of pickleball, becoming an instructor and earning the title of "Queen." MaryAnn enjoyed playing golf (even shot a hole-in-one!), mahjong, poker and spending time with friends. She was an active parishioner of St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church, a volunteer for the Knights of Columbus Council Ladies Auxiliary, Operation Shoebox and Cornerstone Hospice. MaryAnn and Fred were fortunate to travel, where they visited Alaska, went on cruises, and explored numerous foreign countries, including Poland and Israel. She loved to spoil her grandchildren with love, gifts, and her time.
MaryAnn battled dementia for the last 10 years of her life, but delighted in listening to music by Andrea Bocelli, visiting with family and friends and keeping Fred on his toes. On her good days she would show her snarky sense of humor and beautiful smile.
MaryAnn is survived and missed by her loving husband, Fred, of 54 years, her children, Peter (Jennifer) Targos, Robert Targos, Patty (J.C.) Corrigan, as well as her brother, Robert (Elayne) Stabile and sister-in-law, Martha McNulty. She will be forever cherished and remembered by her five grandchildren, Michael Targos, Marcus Targos, Nathan Corrigan, Kate Targos and Shannon Corrigan.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be celebrated in memory of MaryAnn on Tuesday, April 15, at 1:00 p.m., at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church. A committal service will be held at Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia at a later date.
