Mary Alyce Westendick

Mary Alyce Westendick was born on May 21, 1929, to Frank and Alyce Westendick at the lying-in hospital that was the former home of U.S. President William McKinley in Canton, Ohio. That same year, Mary arrived in Tallahassee, Florida, with her mother, father and two older siblings, Francis (Frank) and Helen. Growing up in Tallahassee, she attended Sealey Elementary School and graduated from Leon High School in 1948.
Mary attended Florida State University and graduated in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Mary then taught kindergarten at Samoset Elementary School in Bradenton, Florida, and retired after 37 years in 1990.
She was a beloved teacher with a life-long passion for teaching young children. Over the years, she enjoyed visits from her former students dating back to her first classes in the early 1950s. After she retired, she moved to Tallahassee in 2013 to be with her family.
She died March 7, 2023, at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.
The Westendick family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm in the Capital Room of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home - Riggins Road.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 16, at 10:30 a.m., at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Tallahassee.
She is survived by her siblings Robert Westendick of Jacksonville, Joe Westendick of Tallahassee, and Katherine Wagner of Tallahassee.
