Mary Stapleton
Help us celebrate Mary! Please share your stories and photos, and invite others who remember Mary.
On the morning of January 31, 2020, Mary Stapleton of Bloomington passed away peacefully. She spent her 91 years of life in Bloomington enjoying the culture the city had to offer. She started working at Brummett's Pharmacy as a teenager, serving sodas and conversation to everyone who came in, then doing the bookkeeping until the drug store closed in 1977. She spent time working as a secretary in various departments at Indiana University where she fostered her love of music, attending numerous events at the School of Music throughout her years. She was well-known in the craft show scene, selling dolls and wall hangings that she designed. Mary was a dedicated volunteer at the Opportunity House for many years. But above all, she was the matriarch of the Stapleton family, raising six children. As their families grew, Sunday dinners and pizza & euchre parties grew to include 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Maxine Mingee, Rose Hudoff, Sue Shields, and Phyllis O'Malley and one grandson.
She is survived by Dexter (Dianna) Stapleton, Jane Reeves, Carey (Liz) Stapleton, Jack Stapleton, Phillip (Lori) Stapleton, and Betsy (Greg) Laurent.
No services are being held. Consider honoring Mary by watching a musical, doing a crossword with your loved ones, or making a donation to Opportunity House. That's what she would have wanted.
A generation gone, but not forgotten.
