Mary Lou Spicher, 90, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 27, 2024.
Born in Dothan, Alabama on September 30, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Alice Reeves Cox and Raymond Dodgen.
Mary moved to Hagerstown with her family for their work at Fairchild Industries in 1946, and this is when she met Carl Eugene Spicher on their bus to school. Carl was later to become her beloved husband of over 74 years. They were inseparable as they built a home, family, and the Spicher's Appliance business together.
Mary's primary career was that of taking care of her family. Besides her loving husband, Carl, she is survived by three children, Cindy Douglass and husband Paul H. Douglass, MD of York, PA; Barbara Spicher and husband Martin Burke of Shepherdstown, WV; and Curt Spicher and wife Sabina Spicher of Hagerstown. She also is survived by seven grandchildren: Benjamin Howard Douglass (wife Laurie) of Alexandria, VA; Megan Douglass Rohm (husband John) of Sinking Springs, PA; Ashley Lauren McPherson of Charleston, SC; Callan Spicher of Frederick, MD; Carrie Spicher Relyea (husband Mike) of Charlotte, NC; C. Ethan Spicher (wife Sophia) of Hagerstown, MD; and Mark Spicher of Hagerstown, MD. Mary also had six great-grandchildren: Cole Douglass of Nottingham, MD; Tessa Douglass of Portland, OR; Christina and Nicholas Rohm of Sinking Springs, PA; Michael Archer Relyea of Charlotte, NC, and Cameron Bodie Spicher of Hagerstown, MD.
Known as Nana to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren alike, she was happiest when she played games, made crafts, baked cookies, made hard candy and had them for overnight visits. For many years Mary and Carl hosted family and friends at their bay house with many crab feasts and cherished conversations.
Mary was an enthusiastic member of the Salem Reformed Church having served on the consistory and happily took part in many fundraisers and dinners. She also found much gratification working with the members of the Maugansville Ruritan Club as they raised money for the community and especially the baseball teams. She greatly loved her Salem Reformed Church and Maugansville Ruritan community of friends. She was an avid seamstress and knitter and created beautiful quilts for family and friends, as well as for those in homeless shelters. At Christmas she bought countless presents for needy children. For many years she served as a Red Cross volunteer and worked in their office and on their many blood drives. Her charity work gave her great reward.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 3rd at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Rd, Hagerstown, MD. The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 10:00am, followed by the service at 11:00am. The internment will take place at the church immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The American Red Cross, 1131 Conrad Court, Hagerstown, MD 21742 or to Doey's House, 11370 Caring Pathway Lane, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, MD.
