Mary Elizabeth Smith Looney, age 81, of Lilburn, GA, peacefully passed away Monday, February 1, 2021.
Graveside services for Mary will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, GA with Rev. C. Kay Fuino officiating. Mary was born on August 17, 1939 in Nashville, TN but grew up in Atlanta and lived in the metro area her entire life. She was a graduate of Hoke Smith High School and Georgia State University. She later returned to Georgia State to earn her master's degree. She taught English at Hoke Smith and at Sylvan High Schools in the 1960s and was the faculty advisor for the Sylvan High newspaper. In the 1980s she returned to teaching in Gwinnett County and taught special education until her retirement in 2005. Mary was a faithful member of Duluth First United Methodist Church. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Grady Smith and Frances Elizabeth Verner Smith. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Looney Johnson and Bryan; grandchildren, Katherine Johnson and Sarah Johnson; sister-in-law, Doris Looney Brackett; cousins, Sally Shropshire and Charles Williamson; great-nephew, Hayden Brackett; and Robert E.
