Mary Janice La Flame Proctor died peacefully on May 10, 2022, at Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley, Washington. She was 93 years old.
Known as Jan to family and friends, she was born April 16, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Alonzo La Flame and Jeanette Guilbault. She attended private Catholic schools, including Messmer High School in Milwaukee.
Jan was a full charge bookkeeper for much of her life. She also was a proficient pianist and taught piano for many years.
Jan was married three times, the first time in 1947 to Milton Heeren in Wisconsin. In 1958, she married William O. Boyd Jr. in Santa Barbara, California, where she helped raise his two sons, William L. and Robert, in the Los Angeles area.
After William died in 1985, she married Boyd "Red" Proctor in 1989. They moved in 1990 to acreage near Sedro-Woolley. Jan worked for several years as a pharmacy clerk for Rite Aid in town until health issues made it too difficult.
She enjoyed "spoiling" their succession of dogs named Bud, attending United Methodist Church, visiting with friends, playing Bingo at area casinos and watching TV until Red's death in 2015.
Rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and back made everyday activities and mobility very difficult and painful, so she moved to an assisted living facility in 2015, then to Life Care Center in 2017.
Jan is survived by her sister Yvonne Marie Jones and nephew Robert Jones, both of California, nieces Lisa La Flame of Texas and Cynthia Justice of California; stepson William (Bill) Boyd and wife Kathy of Sedro-Woolley, stepson William O. Boyd III of New York; four step-grandchildren: Sean of New York, Elizabeth (Betsy) of California, Peter and Charles of Sedro-Woolley, step-great-grandchildren: Liam, Natalie and Alexis. Her brother, Alonzo (Lonnie) La Flame, died in 2004.
Jan also cherished her in-law siblings Ruth Lytle, Lilly Hamrick, Linda Spencer, Truman Proctor and Truett Proctor, all of North Carolina; and stepdaughters-in-law,
Sharon Eagle and Wanda Kolbusz, both of Michigan, and Jane McCarthy of California.
Cremation and internment were conducted by Hawthorne Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. No service was held at her request. Her ashes, along with those of her husband, Red Proctor, were interred simultaneously.
