Mary Lenore (Chapman) Ondrejka, aged 89, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024 at Maple Meadows Assisted Living, in Fond du Lac, WI.
Mary was born on May 28, 1934, in Elmwood, WI, to Clyde and Marcilia Chapman. After graduating from high school in Juneau, WI, in 1952, Mary earned a teaching degree at the Eau Claire Teachers College. She briefly taught grades K-12 in a one room schoolhouse. On July 17, 1954, she was married to Charles S. Ondrejka of Mayville. While raising her family, Mary worked as a substitute school teacher, bookkeeper and EMT. In her later years, she worked at PMI until her retirement.
Mary was previously active in the Markesan community and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. She had many dear friends with whom she enjoyed playing bridge and 500, and an occasional trip to a nearby casino. Mary was an enthusiastic Packer, Brewer and Badger fan and an avid reader. After she retired, Mary (and Chuck) enjoyed traveling around the U.S. to spend time with family and babysit grandchildren. Mary spent the final years of her life in Fond du Lac to be closer to family. She suffered from the progressive and devastating effects of dementia.
Mary is survived by her children, Andrew (Denise) of Hot Springs, SD, Mary Jo of Reston, VA, Ellen (Scott) Zimmerman of Fond du Lac, Charles (Connie) of Muskegon, MI and Art (Shelley) of Malone; her grandchildren, Daniel (Janelle), Alyson, Andy (Brittany), David (Katie), Chaz (David) and Olivia (Anthony); her great grandchildren, Ryan, Haylee, Conor and Greyson. She is further survived by her sisters-in-law Alice Boerst and LaRaine Chapman and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, her parents and siblings.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Cornerstone Funeral & Cremation Services, 181 S. Main St, Markesan on Friday, May 17, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Inurnment burial will follow at Phelps Cemetery, Town of Green Lake.
