Mary was born in Seymour to the late Paul "Pete" and Faye Dailey Lahne. Mary graduated from Hayden High School in 1954. She married Robert Eugene Campbell, and together they had a son, Paul Douglas Campbell. She later married LeRoy Sterling in 1970. He passed away in 1999.

She also enjoyed working in her flower beds, making crafts, and outing with her friends, Martha Sizemore (deceased) and Margo Brewer of Brownstown who has been a close friend for 60 years. Mary used her retirement years to volunteer through community groups. She especially supported ministries through her home church, Zion Lutheran Church, where she was a proud member of the "Apple Dumpling Gang," helping to prepare increasing numbers of apple dumplings for the annual Oktoberfest to support church missions.
Survivors include her son, Paul Douglas (Marlene) Campbell of Seymour, Indiana; two grandsons, Daniel Campbell of Hartford, Connecticut and Matthew Campbell of Seymour, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
