Mary Kathleen Labar Owens was born October 9, 1931, to Cordie Scoggins Labar and George L. Labar Sr. in Harlingen, TX. She married Buddy Melvin Owens on June 8, 1950, and the two were married 55 years until his death in 2005. They had 4 children: Judy, Eric, Dane, and Brent. In 1961, they founded the Rio Grande Valley Children's Home in Mission, TX. In 1998, after 35 years of service, Rio Grande Children's Home became a part of Buckner International. She and Buddy still felt the call to help others, so Buddy accepted the roll of Interim Administrator of Pleasant Hill Children's Home in Fairfield, TX. She was a woman of faith who gave wise counsel when asked, always willing to serve, and generous in all ways. She is preceded in death by her husband Buddy, her son Eric and her siblings, Joyce, Jean, George, Paul, and Wayne. She is survived by her daughter Judy, and sons, Dane (Carol) and Brent, 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 1600 Harvey, McAllen, TX. As per the families request a private burial will take place at Valley Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Missions In Action International, 3713 North La Homa Rd. Rt. 2, Mission, Texas 78574 and/or the charity of your choice.
