Mary Hannah Jacobs, a matriarch with moxie, has moved on to her next adventure at the age of 93. A native of Randolph, VT, she passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020, in her home at the Randolph House surrounded by those who loved and cared for her; at peace.
Mary was born in Randolph, VT on June 28, 1927 to Samuel and Hazel Bullard and was 4 months old at the time of the Great Vermont Flood of 1927. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1945 and graduated Boston Children's School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1948. Her strength in the community and caring for others as her profession lasted 40 years that sometimes took her to wild crooked lanes to comfort and support those in need. She gave us her best throughout her fulfilling life.
In 1948, she married Stanley Fred Hannah (1967). Widowed at 39, she was blessed to find friendship and love with Morton Thomas Jacobs (1976) in 1973. Their family melding was a boisterous affair that invited all that needed a warm meal and a house to feel welcome to. Even when she was dealt difficult circumstances, she showed us how to persevere, and shared her spunk and tenacity with her family and community. One of her favorite sayings was "It may not work out the way we planned, but it will work out".
In times of need, love and joy, Mary was there for her family. She bequeathed determination and grit to all her children. She joins 4 of her 6 children, Jim (2013), Jane (2009), Jeff (2002), and Joel (2014) and her life-long friend Barbara (Cookie) Campbell (June 24, 2020) on a new expedition. Her wit, loving smile, and spirit of giving, will be remembered warmly by her surviving children; John Hannah and Judy Brown, daughter-in-laws; Paula Hannah, Betsy Hannah, Gail Hannah, Laura Hannah, and step-daughters; Cheryl LeClair and Sheila Jacobs. Mary's heart was our family's heart; she comforted, indulged, and even spoiled, nieces, a nephew, eighteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Her sweetness will never compare to the countless marshmallows that were roasted for her by those that love her.
Her dedication to her community did not end with her career as a nurse. She was an avid reader, which made her an ideal volunteer for the library. Through her community at the senior center, she developed a love for writing as a member of the "Hale Street Gang" and published several short stories. Her legacy of adventures and stories will be remembered in us. She always gave of herself to others, as a volunteer with the hospital chaplaincy she provided solace and comfort. Her generous love of family and community will be missed. We have been blessed to bear witness to her life, and to be given life through her.
She is to be interred beside her husband, Stanley Hannah in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Randolph, Vermont, on Friday, August 21, 2020, at 11:00 AM. In lieu flowers donations may be made to the Kimball Public Library, 67 Main Street, Randolph, VT 05060. Online condolences may be made at www.dayfunerals.com.
