Mary Sylvania (Vanie) Hughes
It is with great sorrow that we lost our beloved Mother, Grandmother & Great-Grandmother on August 20th, 2022 surrounded by family till the very end.
Vanie was born February 6th, 1937 to Ralph & Esther Davenport in Bakerton, Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her parents & all of her seven siblings except one very special older sister, Evelyn. Also preceded in death by her husband Melvin, whom they enjoyed forty-three happy years together.
Mom was very feisty, to say the least! She told you what she thought, sometimes to a fault. The first thing out of her granddaughters Mercedes mouth after she passed was who's going to bitch at me now.
Her family was everything to her. Children: Kim (Dick) Richards, Eric (Debbie) Morley, Alan (Kelli) Hughes. Granddaughters who made her very proud: Anna (Scott) Flynn, Lena (Mike) Starkey, Mercedes (Mike) Newton. Her pride and joy were her great-grandchildren: Jack, Molly, Grace & Henry Flynn, Adelyn, Graham & Logan Starkey and Carter, Emersyn, Alea and Erin Newton. She also has many nieces & nephews & one very special niece, Patty, which was more like a sister to her.
Mom had many friends she made while working at Kent State University as a cook for many years, then NEOCOM until she retired. She loved bowling and throughout her lifetime was in many different leagues. She loved tournaments and going to Casinos with her besties. She was also a member of the Kent Moose and once again made lots of friends there. She was always a very friendly person. She loved her BBs at the Moose & was quite lucky with those & enjoyed playing bocce. She loved a good time and told us many times "When I'm gone, please just have a party."
So, upon her request we would like to invite all family and friends to please come and celebrate Mom's life with us on Saturday, October 8, 2022, from 5pm until 9pm at the Kent Elks Club, 2265 E. Erie St., Kent, Ohio. Share your memories and stories & lift a cold one to our mom with love.
