Mary Grunbaum, artist, designer, and mother, died Tuesday, February 15th. She was 79 years old.
A gardener at heart, she was born Mary Katherine Kelley in 1942 in Dallas, to parents Mary and Leroy Kelley. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1961, and then with Honors from Rutgers.
Her degree in studio art led to a career spanning all aspects of quilts. She returned to Texas with her then husband, Rick, after several years in New York, and opened The Great American Cover-Up.
Mary's love of nature began in childhood as she helped at the family's nursery. After closing her quilt shop to raise a family, she became immersed in floral art.
She lead a life full of color and adventure, leaving deep footprints wherever she went. She instilled in those around her an appreciation for the arts, crafts, and all things hand made. She was a woman of substance, conviction, determination, bravery, and great compassion, which even Alzheimer's could not take from her.
Mary is survived by her two children, Adrea and Nico, her two grandchildren, her sister, Kayrene, and her nieces & nephews.
Celebration of Life will be held March 9th, 12-3p, at Smoky Rose.
