Aged 95 of Paradise Valley, AZ passed away on January 20, 2021. Mary was born on January 19, 1926 in Aurora, IL to Charles J. and Mary Alvina Westrup Ertel of Maple Lake, MN. In 1947, she graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Pharmacy, and during the course of her studies met husband William Joseph Dunn, a medical student. After they married, Bill served in the Navy and continued his medical education while Mary worked as a pharmacist in Charleston, San Diego, and Rochester (MN). In 1958, they moved from Champaign, IL to Phoenix, AZ where Bill started his own medical practice amidst a growing brood of children. The respite from the cold weather was something that Mary always treasured. While raising five children, she enjoyed volunteering as a pharmacist at the Little Sisters of the Poor nursing home in the 1960's and 70's. She also served as a docent at the Phoenix Art Museum in the 1970s and 80's. In 1986, Mary was invested in the Order of Malta, made three pilgrimages to Lourdes, participated in various committees and enjoyed preparing meals for the homeless at Andre House in Phoenix. In 2019, she received the Brother Gerard Medal for 33 years of service. Mary was a dedicated mother, avid reader and excellent cook. She loved her family and home in Paradise Valley, AZ. Their mid-century modern house, designed by Bill's cousin, Architect Ed Noonan of Chicago, provided her many years of joy as she demonstrated her flair for interior decorating and, most of all, creating a space that welcomed friends and family. Mary was preceded in death by her husband William J. Dunn and two brothers John Charles Ertel (San Antonio, TX), and Thomas Ertel (Maple Lake, MN). Mary is survived by her five children: Mary Patrice Dunn Kleiber (Martin) of Milwaukee, WI; William Joseph Dunn Jr. (Erin) of Daytona Beach, FL; Charles Richard Dunn (Zohreh) of Tucson, AZ; Timothy Jennett Dunn (Rhanda) of Tiburon, CA; and Kathryn Dunn Tenpas (Ronald) of Chevy Chase, MD. In addition, Mary is survived by fourteen grandchildren: Margaret Kleiber, Nicholas Kleiber, Lisa Dunn (Neal DeJong), Lauren Dunn, (Josh Volinsky) Michael Dunn, Megan Dunn, Matthew Dunn, Andrew Dunn, Grace Dunn, John Dunn, Devin Dunn, Hannah Dunn, Nathaniel Tenpas and William Tenpas. Mary also has five great grandchildren: Gabriel Dunn DeJong, Xavier Dunn DeJong, Felix Dunn DeJong, Josie Dunn Volinsky and Maxwell Dunn Volinsky. Services will be held at a later date in Phoenix, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St Ann's Home, a residence for the elderly and served by the Little Sisters of the Poor.
