Mary Terry Dowdy, age 94, of Montgomery, Alabama, died peacefully on December 26, 2020, at Wesley Gardens Assisted Living, her home for the last 11 years. She was born on February 24, 1926 in Andalusia, Alabama. She received a BS degree in education from Florence State Teacher's College (UNA), and went on to receive her MS degree from Troy State University. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Terry and Huldah Sullivan Terry, her brother James Phillip Terry, and her husband, Rufus Brown Dowdy, Jr.
She began her education career as a teacher at Lafayette School in Montgomery in 1947. She went on to teach at Cloverdale, Bellinger Hill, Bear, and Dannelly Elementary Schools. In 1972 she became the principal at Dalraida Elementary School and remained there for 12 years. In 1984 she began working as a Language Arts Instructional Supervisor for the Montgomery County Board of Education.
Mary was an active member of First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, was a trained Stephen Minister, and served as Chairman of the Board of the Early Childhood Development Center.
She is survived by two loving daughters, Deborah (Greg) Weyandt and Lisa (James) Barber, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and several wonderful nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to thank the staff and associates at Wesley Gardens who loved and cared for her as well as her sitters who never left her side.
There will be a private graveside service for family only and a celebration of her life service when the threat of Covid is lessened.
Mary leaves a legacy of love, kindness, dignity, and strength to all who were blessed to know her.
