The following is a first person account of the life of Martha J. Dent (7/1/34-2/24/21), wife of Darryl E. Dent & mother of six(read below). However, the humble recollections fall short in recognizing Martha's indomitable spirit. Upon graduating High School as her class valedictorian and being told by her own Father that she would make an excellent "secretary", Martha scoffed and went on to attain a PhD. independent of support from her parents. Martha's professional career eventually led her to be director of nursing at St. Luke's Hospital. Never one to slow down, Martha took part in a nationwide evaluation of nursing homes during her retirement years, which assisted her in making informed decisions regarding her own end of life care. Martha was always a champion of gender and racial equality. She was extremely proud to have instilled this in her children, and equally proud to have raised her children in a community (Shaker Hts.) that valued and recognized diversity in the immediate aftermath of the post-civil rights era. Those who wish may make contributions in her name to the Alzheimer's Association, 23215 Commerce Park, Suite 300, Beachwood, OH 44122.
