Mary Elizabeth Brumm Bell passed- away on December 19, 2020 in Woodstock, VT after a period of declining health. She was born on March 11, 1932 in Hartford, CT to Elizabeth Hyde Brumm and John Brumm. She contracted polio as a child and spent a portion of her childhood at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford and later at Newington Children's Hospital in Newington CT. She attended parochial schools and later graduated from Weaver High School. Her father died unexpectedly while she was in high school and she put aside her plans to attend nursing school and went to work to help support her family at Hartford National Bank first as a teller, she later became a bookkeeper for the bank and then an auditor. It was at Hartford National that she met Jack R. Bell and the two were married on September 4, 1965. They returned to Jack's home state of Maine spending two years in Lewiston and then settling in Bangor where they lived for the next 18 years. During their years in Bangor Mary was a stay- at -home mom, raising the couples two children Maureen and John (Jackie). She was an active volunteer at St. Johns Catholic school and church. In 1986 the couple purchased the Monhegan General Store on Monhegan Island Maine which they ran together until 2000. They returned to Bangor in 2001 and then in 2018 the couple moved to The Woodstock Terrace Community in Woodstock, VT. Mary took great pride in the accomplishment of her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed all things related to her Irish heritage. She was pre-deceased by her father John, mother, Elizabeth, and son John (Jackie). She is survived by her husband of 55 years Jack R. Bell; her daughter Maureen Bell Boardman and husband Byron and grandchildren Meghan and Cameron Boardman. Grandchildren Murray and Julia Bell of Las Vegas NV; sister Frances Hughes and husband Nate of Clinton CT and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. There will be a private Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Snows in Woodstock, VT in lieu of flowers donations may be made to Shot@life a United Nations organization that seeks to eliminate polio and other vaccine preventable diseases from the planet.
