"Unpredictable as the weather, carefree as the winds, and busy as the proverbial bees. Her good-natured smile and laughing eyes possess the quality of friendship many of us will never forget." Mary Ann's college yearbook entry captures her essence. She died on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at age 91, in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, surrounded by her four daughters.
Mary Ann was born December 2, 1933, in Needham Massachusetts, daughter of the late Ralph Herbert Chambers and Anne Marie O'Shaughnessy Chambers and one of 9 children.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Joseph Rotter; sisters, Harriet Casoro, and Jean Himmelsbache; brothers, Ralph, Joe Michael, Anthony and Hugh Chambers.
She is survived by her four daughters, Marie Drake of MN, Elizabeth Ann Chambers of MA, Bernadette Hallam and Theresa Cicero of SC; one brother, Stephen Chambers of NY; one sister, Sara Chambers of MN; eight grandchildren; & ten great grandchildren.
Her Catholic faith was central to her life leading her to earn her RN from Boston Catherine Laboure School of Nursing, where she also met her future husband, Stephen. She worked as an RN into her 70s.
Mary Ann loved the outdoors and instilled this in her girls. She and Stephen enjoyed their retirement, touring the US in a Westfalia van and traveling in Europe. She also enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great grands. She was a talented craft person, creating gifts for friends and family. She also volunteered for Girl Scouts, Hospice and more.
Before South Carolina, Midge and Stephen lived at Avila in Albany, NY, enjoying time with new friends. Prior to Avila, they lived in Valatie, NY.
Mary Ann (Mom), your smile, laughing eyes, and indelible spirit will be with us always.
