She was born April 23, 1940, in Springfield, Georgia to the late Irvin and Merle Edwards. She spent her life dedicated to her family, church, and community. Martha had a genuine love for people that was expressed, cherished, and given freely without expecting anything in return. This love was evident through her radiant smile that was a memorable characteristic witnessed by everyone.
Martha graduated from Effingham County High School in 1958. Ms. Crews worked in her Daddy's store, Springfield Trading Company, from 1954 until the birth of her first child in 1965. She continued her career to include being known as the "Avon Lady," Bookkeeper at Tuten's Red & White and Receptionist/Secretary at Craig Odom, CPA. She was also a Clerical Specialist for the S.C. Department of Highway and Public Transportation. Ms. Crews was selected as Hampton County's Best of the Best Secretary/Bookkeeper/Receptionist in the year 2000. She retired as a Chiropractic Assistant in 2002 and spent the rest of her life meticulously planning everything, while hosting people in her home, whether it be for church or just someone in need.
Music was a big part of Martha's life beginning at the age of 11 playing the piano at church and for The Effingham County Quartet for 15 years, of which her Daddy was the original bass singer. Martha performed her own personal piano recital, in 7th grade, for the entire Springfield School District. She was also the pianist for Lillie Chapter #27, order of the Eastern Star in Hampton for 36 years. She was an active member of Nixville Baptist Church for 40 years, where she was a pianist, a member of the church choir, a former Vacation Bible School Music Director, and former King's Kids Choir Director.
