Mrs. Martha Ann Smith Chappelear, 78, of the Greshamville community, passed away Friday July 30, 2021 while residing at The Glen on Lake Oconee. Martha was born September 30, 1942 in Morgan County and was the daughter of the late Walter Gillard Smith and Morelle Wood Smith. She was a life-long member of the Fork Chapel United Methodist Church where she served many roles over the years including treasurer and Sunday school teacher. She was active in the United Methodists Women's group as well as historian for the United Methodist Conference Committee. She always put others before herself and got along with everyone she met. Martha graduated from Greensboro High School in 1960 and went on to graduate from Athens Business College where she met her husband Charles. Martha worked for Athens Eye Associates for 37 years before retiring and then working on the family farm for many years thereafter. Martha enjoyed working in her flowers, being a homemaker, and devoutly enjoyed spending time with and spoiling her grandkids.
Surviving is her husband of 57 years Charles O. Chappelear, one son Samuel J. Chappelear and wife Heather, grandchildren Brooklynne Chappelear and Kirsten Chappelear of Moncks Corner, South Carolina; one daughter Lavonda C. Curtis and husband Ricky, grandchildren Morelle Holcomb, Rick Curtis, and Shayla Curtis of Wrayswood, Georgia; one sister Mary Ethel Rogers and husband Jack, nephews Kenneth Rogers and David Rogers and one brother Walter Samuel Smith, nephews Wally Smith (Katie) and Clay Smith (Lyndsey and children Pearl and Collin).
Visitation will be Saturday July 31 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at McCommons Funeral home in Greensboro, GA. Funeral services will be held on Sunday August 1 at 2:00 PM at Fork Chapel United Methodist Church in Greshamville, GA. Burial will be held at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Greshamville.
Serving as pallbearers are Mike Carson, Rick Curtis, Otis Horton, David Rogers, Clay Smith, and Bobby Wood.. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fork Chapel United Methodist Church, 1670 Reid Duvall Road, Madison GA, 30650. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
