Martha Grace Perry Bryant, 83, died at her home Tuesday, November 1, 2022 after a long illness. She was born July 27, 1939 in New Albany to the late Elwood Lamar and Charlsie Clayton Perry.
Martha graduated from Ingomar School and attended ICC. In 1958, she married the love of her life, Joe Bryant, and they made their home in the Center Community. Their daughter, Denise, was born in 1959. Blessed with a natural gift for music, she taught piano privately in her home and at East Union School. She was the pianist/organist for Center Baptist Church for many years and later at Glenfield Methodist Church. She also played for hundreds of funerals at United Funeral Service. Her eye for fashion and outgoing personality made her an excellent sales clerk at Van-Atkins Department Store for a time. A practiced seamstress, she made many of Denise's school clothes. Family and friends today are warmed beneath her colorful, crocheted afghans.
Life with Martha was loud, fun, and never dull. In early years Martha and Joe filled weekends with late night card games, trips to the mountains, or spur of the moment runs to the coast for fresh shrimp. Later she and Joe would pull to the road, check the wind directions, and follow the wind, destination unknown. They traveled thousands of miles and had grand adventures, many with granddaughter Ashley in tow. Martha easily made friends and generally caused a stir everywhere she went. As her health failed, she often reminded us that she rested confidently in the promises of her home in Heaven, and we know she is making music now at the foot of the Throne.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 64 years, Joe Bryant; their daughter, Denise Allen (Skipper); their granddaughter, Ashley Henderson (Timbo); and three great grandchildren, Jack Rutherford, Lake Henderson and Evie Henderson.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Charles Bryant.
Funeral services will be at 1:00p.m. Thursday, November 3, 2022 at United Funeral Service with Bro. Mike Brazeal officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00a.m. until service time. Burial will be at Center Cemetery. United Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with these arrangements.
