Martha Wallace died Friday, July 8, 2022. Martha was born December 12, 1939 in York, SC to JC McCleave and Janie Webb Bankhead McCleave. She was a graduate of Winthrop University where she received her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. Martha was employed by the Darlington County School District and worked primarily at Thornwell and Carolina Elementary and retired in 2006. She was a volunteer swim instructor at Coker College. She also volunteered for Hartsville Soup Kitchen and served on the Board of Hartsville YMCA. Martha was actively involved with the Darlington County Humane Society and assisted in the startup of the Good News Club at Thornwell Elementary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hartsville.
Martha loved the outdoors, kayaking, camping, and tennis. She was devoted to animals and very passionate about rescuing and rehoming dogs. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and was lovingly known to them as Gram. She enjoyed participating in women's bible studies and attending Billy Graham conferences at The Cove.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby R. Wallace; sons, Brian Wallace (Christy) of Florence, SC and John Wallace (Brittany) of James Island, SC; daughter, Kim W. Frye (Jay) of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren Bankston, Cooper, Katie Wallace Frye, Sullivan, and Emery; and sister, Janie Holliday of Rock Hill, SC.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2022 at First Baptist Church in Hartsville, SC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
