Martha "Joy" McGarvey, 84, of Tellico Village passed away at 12:24 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 23, 2021) at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville.
She was born February 9, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of Paul and Mildred (Ayres) Hainline. She married Kenneth D. McGarvey on September 8, 1956, in Dayton, Ohio. He survives.
She is also survived by four children, Philip (Patricia) McGarvey of Loveland, CO; Timothy (Sharon) McGarvey of Rushford, NY; Sharon (Steve) Wheeler of Midlothian, VA; and Stephen (Jana) McGarvey of Winter Park, FL; ten grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Doris Hainline and Rosemary Hainline, many nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Edith Hainline; and two brothers, Paul Hainline and Mark Hainline,
Joy graduated from Milton-Union High School (Ohio) and attended Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. She was a homemaker, piano teacher, and a helper of her husband in pastoral ministry including music ministry playing piano and organ and singing solos and in choirs. Their ministries took place in churches in Windfall, IN; Warsaw, IN; Springfield, IL; Columbus, OH; Meadville, PA; Pierceton, IN; Mason, MI; and Atlanta, MI before retiring to Tellico Village, Loudon, Tennessee.
Since retirement she has been a member f the First Baptist Church of Tellico Village and has sung in the church choir and in the Tellico Village Singers. She was a joyful servant and hostess, a lover of Jesus, her Savior, as well as a prayer warrior. She had a beautiful soprano singing voice and a wonderful and contagious laugh. She will be missed by all.
The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village Wednesday, January 27, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Charlie Barnard officiating. Burial will follow in Detroit Michigan. The family respectfully asks attendees to wear masks. The service will also be streamed live over the church's website at fbctv.org.
Memorials may be made in Joy's memory to Our Place (ourplacetn.org), day center for Alzheimer's/Dementia to be built later this year in Tellico Village.
