Mark Singer, of Florence, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother passed away on April 27th. He was born in Plattsburgh, New York on July 29th, 1946 to Miriam and Harold Singer as the oldest of three siblings.
Mark attended the University of Michigan, graduating in 1968 earning a Bachelor's degree in Biology. There he met his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Kahn) Singer. After graduation they moved to New York where he attended Albany Medical College, earning a Doctorate in Medicine. He then completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburg, PA. Following his residency, they moved to Columbus, Mississippi where he served for two years as a Major in the United States Airforce as an acting physician. From Mississippi, they moved to Silver Springs, MD where Elizabeth earned her JD. During this time Mark worked part-time as a physician, but mostly stayed home with their young children. Upon Elizabeth's completion of Law School, the family moved to Northampton, MA in 1981.
He spent the next 30 years serving the community of Holyoke as an Obstetrician Gynecologist. He helped establish the Birthing Center in Holyoke. He cared for the community on a multi-generational level for decades and he delivered thousands of babies. By the end of his career he was delivering the babies of patients he had himself delivered years earlier. He was beloved by his patients, his office staff, the midwives, the nurses, and other support personnel at the Holyoke Medical Center. He was known for his calm demeanor, kindness, and unmatched work ethic.
Mark and Elizabeth raised four children in Northampton, MA. Mark was a dedicated father. He was the dad that packed school lunches and got the kids off to school in the morning. He made the dinners, he helped with transportation to their numerous activities and he could often be seen running up and down the sidelines of a sports field cheering them on. He took pride in even their smallest accomplishments.
In retirement Mark enjoyed finally having the time to travel with his wife. He also became an avid bridge player. However his biggest joy continued to come from supporting his family. Over a four year period he was blessed with seven beautiful granddaughters. He would always make himself available to babysit, play games, pick
them up from school, or take them on an outing. His grandchildren truly adored him. In addition to his wife Elizabeth, Mark is survived by his beloved children and grandchildren: his son Paul; his daughter Emily, her husband Gregory, and their two daughters Rachel and Alexandra; his son Ben, his wife Monica and their three daughters Olivia, Stella, and Zara; his daughter Sarah, her husband Patrick, and their two daughters Zoe and Wrenna; and his sisters Susan and Marjorie.
A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Monday, May 2nd at the B'nai Israel Cemetery located at 473 N. King St in Northampton, MA. The Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Donations may be made in Mark's memory to Gan Keshet Preschool in Northampton and The Care Center in Holyoke.
