Mark M. Sherman of Springfield, and Chatham, Massachusetts died peacefully at Baystate Medical Center with his wife Jane and his son Brian by his side. Mark grew up in Worcester, MA and attended Clark University where he was captain of the varsity tennis team and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree from Cornell Medical School and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Mark was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy and served in Vietnam attached to the Marine Corp Third Medical Battalion. Mark was a board certified general surgeon, and thoracic and vascular surgeon. He was in private practice for 39 years serving Springfield and its surrounding communities. Mark was a dedicated physician and truly loved his profession and his patients. Mark was an active and devoted member of Temple Beth El for over 40 years. Mark loved life and embraced it fully. He was interested in any subject you would choose to discuss with him and was great at debating points of view. While not in the operating room, Mark had many hobbies and was skilled with his hands in numerous ways other than surgery. He built and flew radio controlled airplanes and designed and constructed a playhouse for his sons. He had a passion for boating and enjoyed all aspects of it, including building an 8' foot sailing dingy "Lady Jane," a 17' tugboat "Lady Jane II," and a 14' catboat "Miss Carolina," which he built for his eldest grandson. He loved to sail and spent many happy hours on the water. Mark had musical talent as well; he played the tuba, piano, and at the time of death was taking guitar lessons. Mark was pre-deceased by his eldest son, Keith, who passed away in January 2021, and is survived by his devoted wife Jane of 44 years, and his son Brian, his two grandsons Thompson and Calvin, and his daughter-in-law Ashley of Charleston, South Carolina all of whom he loved dearly. Everyone who knew Mark respected and loved him. He was a kind and gentle man who had a positive outlook on life and always saw the good in every person he met. His family will miss him dearly and their sorrow at his loss has no bounds. The funeral will be held at Temple Beth El in Springfield on Friday, October 8th, at 10:00am followed by burial in the Hebrew Cemetery in Worcester, MA. There will be a gathering of friends and family at the Temple following the burial. All are welcome. Social distancing and COVID precautions will be followed.
