Mark L. Hess, age 65, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly on July 22, 2024, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana surrounded by loving family. He was born on November 29, 1958, to the late Arthur L. Hess and Sondra A. (Wilson) Hess in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mark grew up in Logansport, Indiana, the oldest of five children. He graduated from Ball State University in 1982 with a Bachelor's degree in management. Mark went on to earn his Master of Social Work degree with a concentration in mental health and addiction at Indiana University.
Mark was an avid reader, logged hundreds of miles biking the city, and enjoyed extensive traveling, especially in his early years which included residence in Amsterdam for a bit. Mark had a devotion to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A ticket holder for over 40 years, he would faithfully be in turn 3 each May, often with daughter Courtney by his side, watching the greatest spectacle in racing.
He was passionate about helping others, with the exceptional ability to be an attentive listener with words of wisdom, advice, comfort or encouragement to follow. In addition to hands down always being the smartest one in any room he entered, his quick wit was like no other. Always bringing the cleverness and timing of his humor to the forefront of any conversation.
Mark was especially proud to take on a new role in February as doting grandfather to Mallory, his only grandchild. He took great delight in spending time with her and was particularly proud to share the latest photos.
He is survived by his children Zachary Hess and Courtney (Nic) Messick; siblings Sonia (Jeff) Roach; Cathy Miller; Susie Shea and Bart Hess; and granddaughter Mallory Messick; as well as several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family service.
