Marjorie Muse Humbert passed into the more immediate presence of her Lord and Savior, on June 30, 2022. She was born on November 11, 1925 in Winston-Salem, NC to Thula Johnson Muse and John Harvey Muse. Marjorie lived her entire life in Winston-Salem and was a life-long Moravian. Marjorie's father died when she was 12 years old; she and her older sister, Elise Muse Adams, were raised by their mother, to whom they were devoted and admired greatly. Marjorie and her sister Elise had a special bond as loving sisters throughout their entire lives. She attended Christ Moravian Church for the first part of her life, became an active member at Messiah Moravian where she raised her family and in her later years was a faithful member of Fairview Moravian. Marjorie graduated from Reynolds High School in 1943 where she enjoyed the home economics club, sporting events, dances, and spending time with many admirers. Marjorie's vivacious, fun - loving personality naturally attracted others to her and her beauty gave her the opportunity to model at the Junior Miss Shop on 4th Street in Downtown Winston-Salem, while in high school. After graduating, Marjorie attended Women's College of North Carolina (WC) and remained a proud alumnus her whole life. Marjorie's first job after college was with the Air Corps Office of Flying Safety where she met her husband of 45 years, Major William Harry Shields, ll. Marjorie and Bill were blessed with 2 sons, Bill, lll and Mike. As a "stay at home" mom, she was devoted to their interests and developed her expertise in baking delicious cakes and desserts. No one ever visited the Shields' home without being offered several choices of sweets and the boys' friends were always eager to be there around dinner time. Marjorie later returned to work part-time at the Veterans Administration. She was beloved by her coworkers and until her death, maintained deep friendships with her "office daughters". Her husband Bill died in 1990 and several years later, Marjorie met and married Bob Witherington. Bob and Marjorie had a wonderful 12 years together, enjoying dancing, traveling, and playing the handbells at church. Soon after Bob's death, Marjorie moved to Salemtowne, where she enjoyed numerous activities, made many new friends, and loved the Moravian services and events. It was here that she met her third husband, Bill Humbert. Marjorie and Bill were married for a brief 14 months before Bill passed away. Marjorie was an avid bridge player, reader, and member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and Society of the Cincinnati.
Marjorie's life was marked by her deep faith in Jesus Christ. Her two favorite phrases learned from her mother, "This too shall pass" and "My cup runneth over" expressed her philosophy of trusting God and being thankful in all circumstances.
She was adored and will be missed tremendously by her sons and daughters in law - Bill Shields (Gwen) and Mike Shields (Marion), 5 grandchildren - Will Shields, Sarah Shields (DeEtta Famiano), Michael Shields, Meredith Shields and Thomas Shields, great grandson - Matthew Shields, goddaughter - Linda Hastings and Marjorie's dear nieces, nephews, and stepchildren.
