Anna Marie Bailey Davis was born in Charlottesville, VA on September 15, 1939, to the late Edward Homer and Ethel Timbers Bailey, Sr. Marie passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on June 21, 2023, at the hospital surrounded by her loved ones. God called our beloved one home to join her parents and family members who preceded her in death.
Marie attended a Rosenwald Washington grade school (two room school) for seven years. She was then bused to Culpeper, VA to attend the George Washington Carver 4 County Regional High School, the first African American Regional High School in VA. After graduating in 1957 she moved to Washington, DC.
She joined the Eastern Star and became a Daughter of Isis where she kept busy with their functions. Marie was also very active with the George Washington Carver Alumni Association with many of her classmates, planning meetings and throwing fundraising functions. She participated with the DC/Northern Virginia Willing Workers Club that worked on donating money and assisting the pastor of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church of Amissville, VA; which she had joined as a child, following in her father's footsteps. There she remained as a lifelong, active member serving in several roles such as choir member, pianist, Treasurer, and Deaconess until her death.
While living in Washington, DC Marie worked at a Bail Agency where she had the chance to meet Jackie Wilson, Fats Domino, James Brown and Chuck Brown. That is also where she met and married David Davis in 1964. She also studied Cosmetology until little Marie was born. Around 1966-67 she began working as a Pre-school Director at Rudolph Elementary School. Kathryn came along in 1967 and Chandra in 1970. Marie remained at Rudolph until we moved to Virginia in 1977-78 time frame. When we moved to VA she became a Study Hall Teacher at Rappahannock Co High School, and then in 1979 at which time she started her long career at Rappahannock County Social Services where she retired after almost 40 years. (1979 - 2009). Unbeknownst to many at the ripe age of 71, she started doing the Payroll for Butch Zindel of Zindel Real Estate for the last 13 years (started in 2010/2011) and she continued doing it until her passing.
In the community, Marie was a dedicated volunteer of The American Cancer Society, the Julia E. Boddie Scholarship Committee, GWCAA (George Washington Carver Alumni Association), Rappahannock Women's Club, she co-chaired the Rappahannock County Bloodmobile, board member of the Farm Show of Rappahannock/Culpeper and she also participated on the RAAC Board each year as well as with the Rappahannock County Extension Office for Camp Fantastic - an overnight camp for children with a terminal disease.
She leaves to cherish her beautiful life, her loving husband David Lee Davis, four daughters, Marie Antoinette, Amissville, VA; Kathryn Suzette, Manassas, VA; Chandra Linette Graves, Amissville, VA; and bonus daughter Devena Wilson (Willie Earl), Lancaster, TX and bonus son, David Lee Allen, Washington, DC. Five grandsons, Jumaane Middleton, D'Angelo Robinson, Khalil Roman (Heather), Chance Graves, and Xavier Zephaniah (deceased); and four great grandchildren, Zamirah, Aria, Hayden, and Cassius. She also leaves to cherish her precious memories a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mom lived an extraordinarily adventurous life. She had 59 years of marriage, experienced the ups and downs of motherhood, became a loving grandmother, aunt, sister, civic and community leader and all around inspiration to us all. She had a huge heart, was strong, independent (could be stubborn as a mule), but always loving and giving with a beautiful smile. She will be remembered as a true gift to her family, church, and community...a living angel.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 2 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton where funeral services will be held on Monday, July 3 at 11:00 AM.
