Marian (Pence) Schumacher, age 87, passed away at Bethesda Nursing Home on June 15, 2021. Marian was born on July 7, 1933 to Earl and Merle Pence. She grew up in the Conde-Turton area and graduated from Conde High School. After high school, Marian attended Northern State Teaching College where she earned her Elementary Education degree. Following graduation, she taught first grade in Watertown, SD. During this time, she was engaged and later married Robert Schumacher on December 26, 1955. After Bob finished his degree at USD, they accepted a teaching position in Leola, SD. Marian taught kindergarten while they lived there. Different jobs took Marian and Bob to Mobridge, Spearfish, and Thief River Falls, MN. They eventually moved back to Leola and owned the Jack and Jill Grocery Store for several years. Marian worked along side Bob until they sold the store. She then became a favorite substitute teacher at Leola known as "Mrs. Shoe." In their later years, Marian and Bob eventually left Leola and moved to Aberdeen. They were grateful for the many new friends they met while living at Central Villas.
Marian was an active member of the St. James Lutheran Church where she enjoyed being a member of the choir and served as an officer in the WELCA. She was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary, Disco Club, and a past member of Eastern Star. Marian was always very involved in her children's lives as they were growing up. She was a Sunday school teacher and a leader for Cub Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts.
Marian loved reading, music, coffee with friends, and following and watching her grandchildren's activities. Later in life, she enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and all televised South Dakota high school and college sports. Marian was very proud of her six grandsons and was thrilled to welcome into the family two great granddaughters.
Grateful for having shared in Marian's life are her children - Scott (Paula) Schumacher, Manhattan, MT; Brenda (Randy) White, Aberdeen, SD; Patti (Jim) Mitzel, Rapid City, SD. Her grandsons include Brian (Tara) and Derek White, Bryce and Brooks Mitzel, Kade and Kolt Schumacher, and great granddaughters Trichelle and Tomi White. Also surviving are her sister-in-law Bernice Pence of Aberdeen and brother-in-law William (Bonnie) Schumacher of Shelton WA. Marian was preceded in death by her husband Robert Schumacher, her parents Earl and Merle Pence, and brother, Barry Pence.
We will all miss her love, faith, friendly personality, contagious laugh, and her long stories!
