Maria Peters passed away on April 22, 2020 in Ashburn, VA at the age of 85. She had suffered a stroke in September 2015 which left her partially paralyzed and from which she never completely recovered. Maria was born on May 2. 1935 in Neuss Germany. She had three sisters Agnes, Inge, Aenne and was the last surviving member of the Peters' family. She always had an adventurous spirit and came to the United States as a young woman. She lived in New York, a city she loved, and worked for Lufthansa, German Airlines. Once she retired, she moved to Sterling, Virginia. Maria was a powerhouse in a small package. Despite her scoliosis she managed to prove to everyone that she could be a strong, independent and successful human being. She loved to travel and made many friends. It was in Virginia where she became a US citizen. This was an immensely proud and happy event in her life. Maria always loved being around children and missed having children of her own. She was a devoted godmother as well as a volunteer of many years at the Foundlings Home in New York City. During her retirement she became an avid volunteer in the therapeutic riding program in Leesburg. She is survived by a nephew Juergen Perenboom and niece Ingrid Gruenewald and their children Leonie Perenboom and Bentje Gruenewald in Germany. Funeral arrangements have been made at the Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg. Maria's ashes will be received by her family in Germany and private memorial will be held there.
