Maria Cortes Price Hoffman, age 96, of Pendleton, SC, passed away Monday, February 15, 2021, at her home.
She was born in Alajuela, Costa Rica, in 1924 to Manuel Cortes and Felicia Cordero. She came to the U.S. in 1943 and attended Winthrop College. After visiting a relative in Clemson, SC, where she later worked, she met Frank Crowther of Clemson. They were married briefly and had a child, Jake. Upon return from WWII, Frank got an infection from a pulled wisdom tooth and passed away. Two years later, she met Ray Price at Clemson who also was returning from the war and was from Columbia, SC. They were married in 1950, the year Ray graduated from Clemson. They moved to Columbia and had three children, Randy, Scarlett, and Gina. Jake was adopted and took the Price name. Years later they were divorced, and Marie and the children moved to their lake house in Ballentine, SC, where the kids attended school. After the children were grown and left home, she married the Honorable Judge Ralph Hoffman of Conway, SC, and after his retirement, moved to Pendleton, SC. After his death, Marie remained in the Pendleton area close to her family until her death.
Mrs. Hoffman was a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church. She was a good wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved to buy and sell furniture and decorating was her passion and hobby. Like most, she always enjoyed seeing her family. She led a good and exciting life. She left behind a long list of family members to carry on her legacy.
