ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. _ Margaret S. "Peg" Stevens, widow of William "Bill" Stevens, died Wednesday, June 23, 2021, in St. Augustine. She was 93. Born July 2, 1927, in Burlington, Vt., Peg was raised in Syracuse, N.Y., where she graduated from Syracuse University in 1948. After traveling through post-World War II Europe, often on her own, she went to work as a freelance journalist in and around the Syracuse area and was especially fond of her time in Lowville. She later was a full-time columnist for the Syracuse Post-Standard newspaper, where she was among just a few women nationwide covering a brand new technology making its way into living rooms: Television.
She and Bill were married on Sept. 29, 1956, and they had two children in Syracuse before moving to Guilderland, N.Y., where two more joined the family. Peg was a contributor to the weekly Guilderland Sun edition of the Albany Times-Union before working in public affairs for Living Resources. Peg and Bill traveled extensively, taking a trip almost every year and documenting each with albums full of photos. They lived in Guilderland for almost 50 years and began wintering in St. Augustine in the late 1990s, when they fell in love with the charm of the Ancient City. They moved there in 2010. She was keenly interested in the world around her, staying current on global events (especially domestic politics), generous with praise and criticism alike when warranted, and always rooting for the underdog. A lifelong reader, she treasured the St. John's County Public Library. Peg is survived by three children: Tony Stevens and his wife Toni of Pikeville, N.C.; Rik Stevens and his wife Lisabritt Solsky Stevens of Concord, N.H.; and Elizabeth Miuccio-Merritt of St. Augustine. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Bill died in 2011 and a daughter, Margaret R. "Meg" Stevens, died in 2010. Peg's sister Ruth died in 2003. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 12, 2021 at Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y. Arrangements are by Craig Funeral Home, St. Augustine. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice or a charity of one's choice.
