Margaret was born March 7, 1936 in Savannah, Georgia, daughter of the late Edward and Henrietta (Rhetta) Mosher. Her father moved the family to Washington, DC after securing a position at the Government Printing office and later at the Library of Congress. She attended St. Patrick's Academy in Washington. After graduation, she worked for the Federal Government for several years. Then as a young adult, she and her parents moved to Charleston, SC where she met Julius Costa Burris, Jr. She and Julius married and went on to have three children and eventually settled down in Columbia, SC. She worked for and retired from Lexington School District 5.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and enjoyed working with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Margaret, aka Maugie, Aunt Rhetta, Marge, and Marjorie, will be most remembered for her love of life, sense of humor, stories by "Aunt Rhetta", her Catholic faith, love of family and her wonderful friends: Lexington District 5 group, Bunko Babes, the Hat Ladies, the Golden Girls (she was Blanche!) and her "Wine Time" friends.
Margaret is survived by her daughters, Jill Burris Schoener (Cary) of Beaufort, SC and Joy Burris Harkins of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and five grandchildren: Marley & Hunter Harkins, Megan & Katelyn Schoener, and Troy Burris, her sister/cousin Georgia Ann (GA) Rountree, many nieces and nephews and a host of wonderful friends; and last but not least, her baby dog Bogey.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Julius; their son, Julius Valley (Jay) Burris; a sister, Catherine Beylotte; and a brother, Edward Mosher.
Special thanks to Dr. James Williams, Shelly, Pam, Mary, and Kathy of SC Oncology who were so caring and compassionate during her long journey with cancer.
