Margaret Ann Montgomery, 78, of Fredericksburg, Texas passed away on July 16, 2022. Maggie was born on Jan. 14, 1944 to the late Ella Mae and Marvin Earl Sprouse in Birmingham, Alabama.
Maggie moved to the Texas Hill Country in the mid 1970's where she discovered her beloved Luckenbach Texas. She spent many years playing guitar and singing under the majestic oak trees with her son, Monte. She became affectionately known as "The Luckenbach Songbird".
She cooked, judged and served as Master of Ceremonies at chili cook-offs including Terlingua, Texas, home of the International Chili Championship.
Maggie also worked at The Kerrville Folk Festival as Assistant Producer for seven years. She hosted a weekly podcast on TABC Radio and held court on the back porch of her home in Bankersmith, Texas, where she hosted guitar picker circles and sing alongs.
Maggie is preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Jo Sprouse and Elizabeth Smith; son, David Montgomery III, and granddaughter, Sofia Mondini.
She is survived by her loving children, Kathy Hicks (John), Monte Montgomery and Merredith Montgomery; brother, Marvin Earl Sprouse Jr. (Charline); grandchildren: Melyssa Montgomery-Streit (Matthew), Mason Montgomery, Stormy Anderson, Chloe and Vance Montgomery, Wesley Guyton (Rebecca); great-grandchildren, Opal and Penelope Guyton; 16 nieces and nephews.
She created, edited and wrote for the monthly newspaper The Luckenbach Moon. This was her self written job description: "Reporting all the news from Luckenbach (pop. 3). Since nothing ever happened there I had to make it all up. Recently I had to take a sabbatical from non reality so I could take a sabbatical in real life. I am back on the job now in a not-so-demanding position of writing a column for the Moon that recalls all the things that didn't happen before. This new position has earned me the title of 'Luckenbach Historian'".
"Deep in the west where the tall mountains grow I've gone home" is a line from one of Maggie's favorite songs by Shake Russell.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Maggie's name to: Austin Music Foundation, P.O. Box 4308, Austin, TX 78765
