Margaret Kelly McFarland ("Margie") peacefully left this earth on June 5, 2022. She was 93. Her husband James "Mac" McFarland pre-deceased her in 2003. Margaret is survived by her three children, Dan of Germantown, MD, Susan of Arlington VA and Beth of Alexandria, VA. She had four grandchildren: Dan, Greg, Kelly and Joe. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Sam, Daniel, Lilly, Hazel, Wyatt and Autumn. Margie was born in Piedmont, WV. She grew up in a home on "Irish Hill" with her parents William and Mae along with her eight siblings. She had treasured memories of her childhood, including, walking down the hill to St. Peter's Catholic School where she attended, working at the Cut Rate restaurant, and swimming at the town swimming pool. She met her true love Jim McFarland while attending Potomac State in West Virginia. They were married in 1950 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Westernport MD. Jim's career and education brought them first to Shepherdstown WV and then to Fishersville, Virginia where Margie taught home economics at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. In the early 1950's they settled in Herndon, Virginia where they raised their family and made many friends. After retirement, they purchased a house in Ashburn VA, where Margie held bridge parties and was one of the founders of a senior's group, "The Classics." They had many opportunities to travel the world which took them to such places as Hawaii, Japan, Europe and Alaska. While in Herndon, Margie worked with young students as an instructional Aide for Fairfax County Public Schools. She loved working with the children but requested that she no longer have Cafeteria Duty. She was loved by the principal, so he granted her wish. Margie loved music. Her greatest talent was her wonderful voice. After her stroke in 2013, she joined a Stroke Survivor Choir, "Different Strokes for Different Folks" where she was known to ham it up, but in a good way. Her children have memories of her singing all the time around the house. They thought this was normal and that all mothers sang around the house. But her best attribute of all was her love of people. She was authentic in really caring how her friends and family were doing. She always made friends wherever she went. Her optimism was contagious and in times of trouble she would say, "this too shall pass". A memorial service will be held at the Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg, VA on July 2nd, 2022 at 11:00.
