Margaret Elaine Kazmerzak, age 94, of Erwin, SD, passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, after a short illness.
A Rosary will take place at 4:30 PM on Sunday, April 18, 2021 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bryant, SD. Visitation will follow the Rosary from 5-7 PM at the church.
A Funeral Mass officiated by Fr. Richard Baumberger will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 19, 2021 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bryant, SD. The organist will be Jane Pommer. The service will be live streamed via the Crawford-Osthus Funeral Chapel Facebook page.
Face masks are encouraged for all services.
Elaine was born on February 4, 1927, to Leo and Hazel (McCaskell) Coughlin on a farm four miles north of De Smet, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet, SD. She attended country schools until 7th grade. Elaine graduated from De Smet Public High School in 1945, attended SDSU for a year, and then worked at J.C. Penney and the De Smet News. Elaine worked 4.5 years as a home health nurse until breast cancer required her to retire.
On June 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Hubert "Budd" Kazmerzak at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in De Smet, SD. They made their home and raised their five children on a farm just East of Erwin, SD. Here is where the couple lived 67 years of married life, and where Elaine continued to live after Budd's passing in 2014.
As a mother of five, she kept busy stocking the cookie jar with chocolate chip cookies, keeping up with the housework as well as school activities. Still, Elaine was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Altar Society in Bryant, SD, and was a Eucharist Minister for 30 years. She was a dedicated member of the Erwin American Legion Auxiliary known especially for making the carrots at the annual turkey dinner. She was a charter member for the bridge club in Erwin, SD, where she played cards for over 60 years. As a dedicated grand and great grandmother, Elaine made each grandchild and great grandchild a baby quilt.
She is survived by her five children, Rodney (Chris) Kazmerzak of Sun Prairie, WI, Sally (Ed) Wilkinson of Erwin, SD, Douglas (Carol) Kazmerzak of Erwin, SD, Cathy (Ronald) Nelson of Lake Preston, SD, and Beth (Patrick) Amor of Sioux Falls, SD; twenty grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pearl Coughlin; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, parents-in-law, her husband, Budd, two brothers, LeVere and Dale, one sister, Jean, three sisters-in-law, and her step mother, Elizabeth.
