Marcia Ann Zimmerman, age 87, died on June 8, 2023, after a 15-year struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born on September 6, 1935, the daughter of Walter E. and Gladys Weiland of Rochester, New York, and lived in that locality for 35 years. She treasured her many childhood friends, especially Nancy Miller Shellard of Fairport, New York, who has remained her most loyal friend for the past 85 years. They most famously shopped together and were inseparable companions. An outstanding student, Marcia graduated with honors from John Marshall High School in Rochester, New York, in 1953 and Brockport State Teachers College in 1957. After graduation, she began a 17-year teaching career in Greece, New York, soon developing a lasting love for teaching fifth graders. Her students were always a source of great satisfaction. After her marriage to husband, Fred E. Zimmerman in 1958, she chose to put her career on hold and became a full-time parent, raising a family of three boys. After the family moved to Dallas, Texas in 1970, she resumed her teaching career in Richardson, Texas, with a long tenure Spring Creek Elementary School. She retired in 1992.
A good athlete, she loved a wide variety of outdoor sports, particularly swimming, skiing, ice-skating, and tennis. Later in life, she enjoyed long evening walks in the neighborhood with her husband of nearly 65 years, always holding hands, counting squirrels and rabbits along the way. She admired and appreciated nature. Countless hours were spent quietly sitting on the backyard patio by the pool, watching birds, sipping water from the spa, and listening to the entertaining mockingbirds. In her spare time, she was an avid reader and puzzle solver. Above all, she was totally dedicated to the well-being and education of her family. Nothing in her life was more important, and she never wavered. She will never be forgotten.
Marcia is survived by her husband, Fred Zimmerman of Dallas, Texas; sons, Craig Zimmerman, and wife, Gretchen of Dallas, Texas, Randall Zimmerman of Dallas, and William Zimmerman of San Antonio, Texas; brother, Burton Weiland of Rochester, New York; grandchildren, Amanda Zimmerman of San Antonio, Texas, Kyle Zimmerman of Dallas, Texas, Kaitlyn Zimmerman of Dallas, Texas and Matthew Zimmerman of Dallas, Texas; and nephew Barry Hoffman and wife Linda of Northumberland, Pennsylvania.
Special recognition is given to the staff of Family's Choice in Dallas, where she has been living for the past 10 years for the tender, loving care that they have so generously provided. Family also thanks numerous hospice caregivers for their excellent guidance and support. In accordance with her final wishes, there will be no formal services.
