Marcia Priscilla Hieb was born December 31, 1929 in Claremont, SD to Homer T. Swanson and Edith C. (Miller) Swanson. Marcia was the 2nd oldest of 4 children, Mavis Johansen, Sharon Thompson, and Curtis Swanson.
Marcia was raised on a farm near Claremont, SD and graduated from high school in 1947. She attended South Dakota State University for 1 semester, but returned to the farm to help care for her younger siblings. Once she was able to leave the farm, she worked as a typist in Chicago, Denver, and Seattle, but then grew homesick for South Dakota. She returned home to be close to her parents, eventually settling in Mitchell.
Her friends lined her up on a blind date with a man named Harlan Hieb, who eventually became her companion for the rest of her life. Harlan and Marcia were married in Jasper, MN on December 6th, 1964 then moved to Delmont to run the Hieb Sandpit and farming operation. They adopted 3 children, Donna Gustafson, Jack Hieb, and Alan Hieb. After retiring in 1993, they moved to a small acreage west of Mitchell where they lived for 13 years and spent time with family and traveling around the country on bus tours. In 2006, they moved into Mitchell where they have lived ever since.
She was a devout Christian and faithful member of Grace Reformed Church. She never missed an opportunity to share her faith with anyone she encountered. From her earliest years, Marcia always enjoyed being outdoors, running equipment with her father and husband, and playing sports. She was a wonderful friend to many, and had the ability to make anyone laugh with her witty humor.
Marcia is survived by her husband, Harlan Hieb; 3 children, Donna (Joel) Gustafson of Lincoln, NE, Jack (Jennifer) Hieb, of Aberdeen, SD, and Alan (Jill) Hieb of Anthem, AZ; 8 grandchildren, Austin (Nicole) Hieb, Mason Gustafson, Adam Gustafson, Griffin Hieb, Audrey Gustafson, Trevor Hieb, Evan Hieb, and Julie Hieb; 1 great grandson, Opie Jack Hieb; 1 sister, Sharon (Hank) Thompson of Rapid City SD; 1 sister in law Shari (Curtis) Swanson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
