Marcella Marie Wilson Hickerson peacefully entered into eternal life with her Lord and Savior in Tyler, Texas on January 6, 2024 at the age of 95. She was born on March 23, 1928 in Ralls, Texas and was the only child of Harvey and Iva Bownds Wilson.
Marcella graduated from Lubbock High School and married the love of her life, John Hickerson, on November 27, 1946 while he was a student at Texas Tech University. They were active members at Central Baptist Church and she was the last surviving member of "the gang" - a group of young married Sunday School members who remained extremely close until each of their deaths.
In 1949, Marcella and John had a son, John Stanley, who was born with special needs and the young couple devoted the next 55 years to providing an excellent quality of life for him. In 1960, they welcomed their son, Steven. The family moved to El Paso, Texas in 1965. They were members of Scottsdale Baptist Church where Marcella served in Children's Sunday School and created many beautiful altar flower arrangements through the years as a member of the Altar Arrangements Committee. She was a past president of the El Paso Garden Club and the El Paso Engineering Wives Association. Upon their return to Lubbock in 1992, they were members of Oakwood Baptist Church.
Marcella is preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, Stanley. Survivors include her son, Dr. Steven (Jill) Hickerson of Tyler, Texas; granddaughter, Haleigh (Curtis) Lane of Longview, Texas; granddaughter, Hannah (Dr. Robert) Brock of Tyler and 3 great-grandchildren - Neely Lane, Garrett Brock, and Nora Lane.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 pm on Thursday, January 18 at Sanders Funeral Home with graveside services (weather permitting) on Friday, January 19, 2024 at 10:30 am in the Lubbock City Cemetery with Pastor Curtis Lane officiating. The family wishes to extend much gratitude and thanks to the staff of Meadowlake Skilled Nursing of Tyler for the outstanding care they provided for the past three years. Thank you, also, to physicians and dedicated medical staff of UT Health Tyler Trauma ICU and Specialty Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Samaritanspurse.org or your favorite local missions organization.
