Malcolm David McCandless, age 65, of Memphis, Tennessee, died peacefully on August 25, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer.
David attended Germantown schools and graduated from Union University with a bachelor's degree in business. He and his family are long time members of Second Baptist Church.
David was a man of many talents. Actually, he could do anything he set his mind to: from curing hams and making sausages, to building custom Adirondack water ski chairs, to installing water purification systems in Honduras through Living Waters for the World. David was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he loved to water ski. He set a personal record of pulling twelve water skiers at one time. He also was known for water skiing in costume, and if you happened to be at the lake at just the right time, you could have seen a gorilla or Superman ski by! As a pandemic project, David started his "fish of the day" series. He caught 335 fish consecutively until the lake froze on February 14, 2021, and ended his streak.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan H. McCandless; daughter Ashley Baker (Ryan); son Malcolm McCandless; 3 grandchildren; sister Sherry Mahoney; numerous nieces and a nephew; and many cherished family members. He was preceded in death by his parents Mary Lynn and Malcolm McCandless.
A private, family graveside burial service will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family desires memorials be made to Second Baptist Church (4680 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis, TN 38117) or Living Waters for the World (5016 Spedale Ct. #399, Spring Hill, TN 37174).
