Mabel M. (Lyman) Harrison passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, May 2, 2024, with her family at her side, following a long and accomplished life. Mabel was born at home and into the loving family of Thomas and Rose (Dupont) Lyman. Her formative years were spent growing up with her four older siblings in the Hamlet of Verdoy, in the Town of Colonie, where she received her primary education in the Verdoy Schoolhouse, a one room schoolhouse of that era. She later graduated from Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady and then continued her education at Russell Sage College from where she earned a degree in accounting. Mabel took employment with the General Electric Company in Schenectady and worked for fourteen months before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1943 to serve in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during World War II. She was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Corporal and returned home and to her employment with General Electric where she worked as an accountant and in management until her retirement on January 1, 1979. Mabel met John J. Harrison soon after her return from military service and they were married on June 12, 1948 in St. Ambrose Church in Latham. They resided in Scotia and enjoyed a marriage of 49 years before John's passing in 1997. During those happy years together they enjoyed playing golf, traveling to Europe, especially Ireland, and visiting much of the United States. They spent the winter months in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina passing the time with friends playing golf and card games. Locally they enjoyed league membership at the Stadium Golf Club in Schenectady and exercising together at the Schenectady Y.M.C A. Mabel's life truly reflected the virtues of those described as the generation of Americans known as "The Greatest Generation". She will be missed by all those whose life she touched. Mabel's family will be forever grateful to the staff of Elderwood Village for the support and care given to Mabel while she was in residence for the past three years. Your devotion afforded her an opportunity to not only enjoy life but to flourish and for that we offer you our heartfelt thanks. In addition to her parents and husband, Mabel was preceded in death by her siblings, Walter, Alfred and Harry Lyman and Rita Riley; her nephews, Kenneth and Donald (wife Rose survives) and Richard Lyman; nieces, Joan Hager, Mary Riley and Margaret Flood. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Carole McDowell, Cathy Deamer, Thomas and Arthur Lyman, Linda Collette, Patricia Fruscio and Kathleen Judd as well as numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Brian Kelly on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road, Latham. The Rite of Committal and interment with Army honors will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. There will be no public visiting hours.
