M. Glyn Hammons, 82, passed away on December 15, 2020. The son of Hester "Nanny" and Daniel "Daddy Dan" Hammons, Glyn was born in Paris, Texas on December 23, 1937. He married the love of his life, Betty Joanne Bixler, on August 2, 1958. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary this year.
There will be a memorial celebration of Glyn's life at a future date, tentatively planned for the summer of 2021.
Glyn was District Manager for the Abilene Social Security Administration Office. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Abilene for 51 years. He was also on the Board of Directors for Meals on Wheels for 25 years. Glyn and Betty have been active members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church since arriving in Abilene in 1969.
After retiring from the SSA, Glyn volunteered for the local See by Three program, which provided free vision screenings to 3 year olds in daycare. He also traveled the country making presentations for The Committee to Preserve Social Security. He did all this while still playing a mean game of basketball.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Trubie Moore, Beulah Cooper, and Eula Claunch.
Glyn is survived by his wife Betty; son Randy Hammons and his wife Martha; daughter Darla Barron and her husband Glen; daughter Susan Hammons; grandchildren Tyler Hammons, Keaton Barron, and Aja and Jordan Mautner. He is also survived by his sister, Myrtis Polston Lawrence.
Glyn was an avid gardener, but his nurturing spirit was most felt by his family and friends. We knew and felt his influence on our lives and will always cherish our memories of him. The world is diminished with his passing.
