Lyman Uland passed away peacefully on April 16, 2022 at the age of 94 in Hospice of Wichita Falls, Texas. He was born on June 12, 1927 to Frank Uland and Perina DalBo in Alamosa, Colorado. He will be buried in Norris, Tennessee following a Masonic service. He was a Mason for over 50 years.
He grew up on a ranch in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. His stories of being five years old and gathering cattle with old time cowboys were legendary. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 19 and was promptly shipped to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas for undergraduate education. He always said SMU was an eye-opening event after Ft. Sumner, NM.
He married Mary Jane Wood on March 24, 1950 in Anderson County, Tennessee. They had one daughter, Rebecca Uland Farmer. They moved to Lubbock, Texas in 1957 where he worked in the accounting field. He stayed in Lubbock until 2017 when he moved to Rolling Meadows in Wichita Falls. For five years he enjoyed making new friends and never met a stranger. He especially liked playing bingo and betting with Jim Hart for a quarter a game.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2005 and his son-in-law Dr. Stephen Farmer in 2019. He is survived by his daughter Becky and many friends.
Special thanks go to TJ Johnson and to Bill Glisson from The Timbers at Chama, New Mexico. Lyman loved to hunt almost more than he loved to eat. These men allowed him to experience one final elk hunt. I will always be grateful to them for giving him this opportunity.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scottish Rite for Children, 2222 Welborn Street, Dallas, Texas 75219 or the charity of your choice.
