Lula M. Garland February 15, 2023 Lula M. Garland, 81, of Syracuse, New York, received her wings, February 15, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. She was born in Wilcox County, Alabama to the late Ezekiel and Inell Thomas. Lula graduated from Snow Hill Institute in Snow Hill, Alabama, where she was a star basketball player. After graduation she moved to Syracuse, New York where she found employment with General Electric. She was united in marriage to Benjamin H. Garland, Jr. in 1972. Lula later attended Utica School of Cosmetology and after graduation, she owned and operated her very own Beauty Salon. Lula decided later to attend Simmons School of Mortuary Science where she received an associate degree. She was awarded a certificate of recognition for her exemplary work on facial reconstruction. After graduation, she joined her husband in the mortuary business where she worked until her health began to fail. Lula was an avid golfer where she received many awards and trophies for her efforts. She was a member of New Life Temple of Praise. Lula was proceeded in death by her parents, two brothers Charlie (Bernice) Thomas, Tommie (Carrie) Thomas, three sisters, Mary Thomas, Lelia Thomas, and Sallie (Sam) Cunningham. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Benjamin H. Garland, Jr.; six sisters, Lillie Thomas, Essie (Spencer) Dorsey, Alice Moore, Denise (Arthur) Holt, Martha Thomas, and B'Olivia Harris; two brothers, Ezekiel (Betty) Thomas, David (Glory) Thomas; a special nephew, Charles (Angie) Garland; sister-in-law, Olive Blakney; a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Home going services for Lula, will be Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Bethany Baptist Church, located at 149 Beattie Street, Syracuse, NY. Visitation 3pm-4pm; services to follow promptly at 4pm. In leu of flowers, donations can be made to the Syracuse Golf Association Junior Program, c/o Barbara Moon, 1236 Comstock Ave, Syracuse, NY 13210 and The Center of Hope International, an after school STEM Program for at risk youth, 5013 South Salina Street, Syracuse, NY 13205.
