Luis Alberto Cantu passed away July 1, 2022 after a brief illness. He was 76.
Luis was born December 1, 1945 in Harlingen, Texas to Juan and Sulema Ramirez Cantu. He grew up surrounded by extended family members in both San Benito and Harlingen and visited the ancestral farm in Santa Monica often. Luis attended Harlingen High School where he graduated in 1965. After serving three tours of Vietnam where he received HVAC technical training, Luis worked for Coastal Engineering, Trane Air Conditioning, HEB, and the Head Start Program.
Pride in his service to the United States Military led former Sgt. Cantu to join several veteran's groups. He was an active member of Catholic War Veterans Post 1065 and served as State Treasurer. He was also a member of the DAV W.M. Bell Johnson #121 Chapter. His deep sense of duty to his military obligations was exemplified in his activity with the VA's "21 Gun Salute" Team out of the Mission, TX area. Luis was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 11070 Harlingen, TX. Luis also assisted the Harlingen American Legion Post on the "21 Gun Salute" Team.
Luis is best remembered for his sense of humor, always joking in two languages and for his cooking skills both of which he inherited from his mother. He enjoyed dancing and was a meticulous record keeper putting his complete name on everything he owned, probably a habit he picked up in the military. A parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Luis served as an Usher and always arrived two hours before services to make sure everything was in proper order and to fix anything that wasn't.
Luis is preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Norma Loida and Norma Franco.
He is survived by his two children, daughter, Maribel (David) Martinez and her two children, Noah and Bianca Rodriguez; son, Luis Cantu Jr., and his daughter, Emma. In addition, Luis is survived by his brothers, Juan R. "Bobby" Cantu and Henry Cantu; aunt, Maria Elena Martinez; nephew, Tony Franco; niece, Marisol (Ruben) Perez; and great nephews, Nathan Perez and Kaleb Franco.
Honored to serve as his pallbearers are Roy Gomez, Nathan Perez, Ray Martinez, Luis Banuelos, Heron Rocha, and Ismael Herrera.
