LTC Avery W Grant, RET, 91, was born in Memphis, Tennessee and passed on April 20, 2025 at Northeast GA Hospital, Braselton, GA. LTC Grant was raised and educated in New York City, He graduated from The Bronx High School of Science, City College of NY, where he acquired his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and his Masters of Transportation from Polytechnic, New York University.
LTC Grant was a proud veteran of Vietnam and Korean wars earning several medals,
commendations and awards throughout his military career. He was a former Division
Signal Officer and Battalion /Commander. Upon retiring from active duty, he continued
his military duties as a reserved officer for 25 years. While serving in the reserves, LTC Grant also re-embarked on his Electrical Engineering career at NYC Transit Authority and then served as Electrical Engineer for the City of East Orange and CECOM, Fort Monmouth, NJ.
Avery was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Methodist Church, Long Branch, NJ. He
served as lay Leader, former Men's Club President NJ, Chairman of the Long Branch
Board of Education (27 years), Executive Director of the Long Branch Concerned
Citizens Coalition, Chairman of the Monmouth County Advisory Council on Aging,
State-Certified Volunteer in Probation, Long Branch VFW Post Commander, founder
and publisher of a free bi-weekly Community Newspaper as well as City of Long Branch Mayoral Candidate. Recipient of 100 Most Influential in New Jersey Award in 1997 and, Chamber of Commerce 2020 Humanitarian Award.
Avery was married to Annie W. Grant for 59 years. They have two children Avery Jr.
Grant (Rose Marie) and Adrianne Dickerson (Peter) and Anthony Ferguson Sr,;
grandchildren Anthony Scott Ferguson Jr. (Belinda), Rene' Landers (Kevin), Kyle Avery Cole, Brandi White (Ahman) and Joshua Grant. Great-grandchildren: Connor Ferguson, Jade and Ivy Landers; Godchildren Lisa, Chelsea, Cheyenne, Sharlene, Norman and Gregory.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, with Rev. Jimmy Hurt officiating. Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park in Lawrenceville. A Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the service on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
